The city of Boston is home to a diverse population of Americans of all colors, religions, and cultures. Join mezzo-soprano, Heather Gallagher and pianist, Yukiko Oba for this concert exploring new music from Boston based composers Mason Bynes, Arturo Fernandez, Dan Shore and James Myers.
Heather Gallagher (mezzo-soprano) Recent engagements include Carmen (Mercedes; Carmen cover, dir Calixto Bieito/Rechi, BLO), Haroun (Soraya; Boston Modern Orchestra Project, dir Gil Rose) the world premiere of The Nefarious, Immoral but Highly Profitable Enterprise of Mr. Burke and Mr. Hare (Margaret, dir David Schweizer, BLO) and Patience (Lady Saphir, Odyssey Opera). In addition to opera, Ms. Gallagher is a frequent concert soloist having appeared with Cape Symphony, Cantemus, and Women’s Chorus of Concord among other organizations. Ms. Gallagher is a Boston Lyric Opera Emerging Artist Alumna, and a recipient of BLO's 2016 Stephen Shrestinian Award for Excellence in addition to an First Place in the 2015 Peter Elvins Vocal Competition, First Place in Metrowest Opera's 2014 Competition, and a Two Year Fellowship from the Atlantic Music Festival. In 2020 Ms. Gallagher started Cultural Wasteland in an effort to create intimate and adventurous chamber collaborations with local artistis impacted by COVID19 and the decimation of the performance industry. Through CW she has produced Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, a cabaret called The Birthday Show: Part Deux, Dance Macabre and Tom Lehrer for President! An Election Eve cabaret. Yukiko Oba, pianist, has performed extensively as an accompanist for recitals, choruses, masterclasses and composers’ projects. Ms. Oba is a graduate of Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo. She began playing piano at the age of 6 in her native Japan. She has been a member of the accompanying staff at Boston Conservatory at Berklee since 1996 and has performed with many acclaimed Boston area singers. As a professional accompanist, she has participated in the MIT concert choir since the Fall of 2016 aside conductor Dr. William Cutter, worked with the Worchester Shubertiad and has been working with the Metropolitan Opera Guild for many years. Most recently, she performed Nico Muhley’s pieces for countertenor with Beth Morrison Project at the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum. Ms. Oba resides in Weymouth, MA with her daughter and husband with whom she frequently plays four hand pieces with. In her leisure, she enjoys running, particularly marathons.
